      Hi all,

I’ve had my Series 2 GP14 for a while but not been out much so far.  Hoping to rectify this soon, and in the meantime been taking the time to read all the excellent material on the website and forum.

Her sail number is 9005, and I recently received the original documentation which shows that she was originally called “Southern Comfort”, but somewhere along the way was renamed to “Jelly Roll II”.  Her previous owner didn’t know the reason behind her current name, other than he believed that there was a famous jazz singer called Jelly Roll.  No idea what happened to, of if there ever was, a “Jelly Roll I”

If I’m honest, I’m not a fan of her current name, and it doesn’t seem to have a story behind it, so I’m thinking of changing it.  Her original name of “Southern Comfort” is better, but I live in the North West, so it doesn’t feel quite right.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on boat names?  “It doesn’t matter, call it what you like?”  Or, “History is important, stick with the original name?”.  Or something in between?  Have you renamed your boat?

Thanks for your comments and suggestions 🙂

At least you boat came with a prior name or two.  As far as I know my Series 1 boat, built way back in 1964, had never been given a official name before me.  I can say this with some confidence as I bought her from the second owner and the first owner had been his brother.

In the US we do not have the issue of boat names needing to be unique like in other parts of the world.  Name her what you will, but make sure it is not offensive, easy to say over the radio and easy to spell in case of official paperwork

Within the Class Association we had a brief period,  from 1954 and for the next 13 years,  when we insisted that names of newly registered boats did not duplicate names already registered,   although this rule was not applied retrospectively.

Then in 1967 the practice was discontinued.

      Steve,

      I think I recognise the name. ..

Is she in fact a Series 2,  or a Series 1 with the “Series 1 to 2 Conversion” done,  (i.e. underfloor buoyancy,  etc.),  and previously owned by my good friend Peter Johnson of Liverpool Sailing Club?

        Hi Oliver,

She is indeed a Series 1 to 2 conversion 🙂

And the name “Peter Johnson” certainly rings a bell (oops!, pardon the pun).

      Sounds like the same boat.

When Peter joined the club,  many years ago,  he was looking for a boat and with the intention of trying out various different types.   Until,  that is,  I took him out in A Capella,   whereupon he announced that his initial search (to evaluate what type of boat) had ended and that he was now looking for a GP14!     When he found Jelly Roll II advertised I went along with him to vet the boat.

The then vendor was (I think) the chap who had done the Series 1 to 2 Conversion,  and he produced copious photographs of the work.   Slightly to my surprise,  and I think perhaps his also,  she ended up significantly lighter than before he started the work,  although I don’t remember whether she was fully down to minimum weight.

Glad to know the boat is in good hands.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on boat names?

You might enjoy the whimsical article “Naming A Boat” which I wrote some years ago,  and which appeared in Mainsail (Spring 2008 issue).   Unfortunately that issue is not on the website;    the link labelled as that actually brings up the Summer 2008 issue so I presume that we don’t actually have the file for the Spring one.

I will email the article to you.

      Thanks Oliver 🙂

Yep, sounds like the same boat.  Peter e-mailed me all the photos of the conversion, and I still have them somewhere on the laptop.

I’ve added a roller-reefing system to the Genoa since I got her.  The varnish needs a bit of TLC at the moment, but still in good shape overall.

Not sure where you purchased GP 9005 from but she was at Tresaith Mariners for several years sailed off the beach in Cardigan Bay, from memory hull was mainly red.

        Thanks Andy,

She has a white hull now, which really sets off her varnished wooden deck well.  The people that did the Series I to II conversion did a really good job.  Looking forward to getting her back on the water again.

Peter bought her from somewhere in the Warrington area,  and sailed her in Liverpool.    Neither is desperately far from Cardigan Bay,  perhaps 150 miles,  so the Cardigan Bay period could have been either before or after Peter’s ownership of her.

Reminder that you can get the Association’s digitised records for the boat from the Office on request.

        Thanks Oliver,

Some time ago I took up the association’s offer to take possession of the original paper records, which is where I found out her original “Southern Comfort” name.  Definitely going to change it from the current “Jelly Roll II” (although would love to know the story behind that) but, like your article said, it’s harder than choosing my kids’ names!  🙂
