ParticipantHi all, my boat has a pivoting rudder but the shock cord isn’t up to the job now. I notice it’s been pinned down both ends, so my question is should I replace like for like, or is there a better solution these days?
many thanks Paul

ParticipantIDK if this is any use, but mine has thin control line not shockcord (probably 4-5mm) . The basic V cleat was past it so I replaced it with a CL257 Auto-Release clam cleat & new line.

ModeratorBin the shockcord; it was never a good system, and there are better systems available nowadays.
Replace with two separate control lines, not elastic but there is no need to go overboard with high tech non-stretch materials such as dyeema; standard polyester is fine, around 4 mm. One control line is an uphaul, led to a standard clamcleat on the tiller; the other is a downhaul, led to a CL257 auto-release clamcleat, also on the tiller.
Adjust the tension on the pivot bolt so that the blade moves as freely as possible vertically, but with no sideways sloppiness; that is likely to be quite a fine adjustment, which can be found only by trial and error.
Hope this helps,
Oliver

ParticipantThanks for the replies, will I need to drill a hole in the rudder blade leading edge to attach the new line to? Not keen on nailing it as the shock cord was.
thank you

ModeratorDrilling a hole is one very good way of doing it.
